ICONOGRAPHY AND SYMBOLISM

 


In Media Studies, Iconography and Symbolism are important concepts for analysing how images and symbols convey meanings and shape narratives.

In Iconography, different elements and symbols are repeated, which are related to the genre. For example, props and costumes.

In the Crime Thriller film “Se7en”, dark cities and dead bodies are used as Iconography.

In Symbolism, objects and colours are used to represent meanings at a deeper level.

In the Film “Se7en”, rain and dark lighting are used as Symbolism.

Our genre was Crime thriller, therefore the iconography and symbolism included:

Guns: violence and danger

Police lights: urgency and investigation 

Crime scenes: death and mystery 

Forensic equipment: science, investigation and analysis

Morgues: death and autopsy

Prisons: punishment and crime 

Nighttime cityscapes: danger, mystery and crime

Rain and fog: grittiness, mystery and tension

Blood: violence, death and crime

Dark alleys: danger 

Abandoned buildings: decay and crime

Mirror: deception 

Shadows: hidden secrets, mystery and suspense

Trains and cars: escape and transition 

Clocks and time: urgency and tension 

Weather: tension and mood

Masks: deception and hiding identity 

Killer’s mask: anonymity and evil

Victim’s innocence: vulnerability 

Criminal’s wealth: corruption and power

Themes:

Good vs. Evil: justice and moral conflict
