TYPES OF GENRES
There are different types of film genres, along with sub-genres.The basic 12 genres are:
Thriller:
Thriller films build suspense and tension, there is mostly a crime or mystery and a detective has to solve it. The music has an important part in thriller movies, you have to look for tracks the create a sense of foreboding, for example the genre we choose was crime thriller therefore, this research was helpful to choose the music.
Horror:
Horror films frighten and can disturb audience, the music
will create a sense of unease and suspense, as if something is about to happen, music with slow and building tempo is perfect for horror genres. I did a Case study on Evil Dead Rise therefore, this research helped
me study this genre even better.
Action:
Action films have a fast-paced sequence, physical stunts and involvement of guns. The music for an action film should be energetic and intense.
Science Fiction (Sci-fi)
Sci-fi films involve alternate realities and deal with the future, the sound choice can be electronic or futuristic, Sci-fi also include future inventions and science which give a feeling that you are in another world, hence unusual rhythms compliment the genre.
Fantasy:
fantasy films, create a feeling of magic and a dreamy environment. Hence, the soundtrack should be magical and create a beautiful melody.
Western:
Western films often feature cowboys and outlaws set in American West, the music should heroic and adventurous, tracks with a powerful rhythm is ideal for western films.
Romance:
Romantic films emphasise on the importance of love in relationships, the music should be romantic and have a soft tempo, beautiful melodies and perfect for romantic movies. I did a Case study of 20th century girl which is a Korean romantic film, it emphasises on first love and romance. This research was helpful in my case study.
Comedy:
Comedy films involve humour and satire, which will evoke your laughter, hence the sound track should make you happy, the music choice should be lighthearted and playful too.
Drama:
Drama film emphasise on character development, emotions and sentiments, the tracks should include emotional depth, a strong melody and should match the intensity of the film.
Apocalypse:
Apocalypse films involve a catastrophic event like a tsunami or earthquake or showing the end of the world, the tracks should include drama and create a sense of urgency. The film 2012 used such background music that created unease.
Martial Arts:
Martial art movies involve combat techniques, the music
Should be energetic. The tracks include strong beats and are intense.
Sports:
Sport films involve competitions and emphasise the importance of sportsmanship, the soundtrack should be inspiring and motivating the audience, often involving strong beats and melodies.
